Wednesday, November 27, 2013 - 1:00pm to 2:00pm
Radcliffe Humanities
Seminar Room

The themes raised by the book will be debated by Professor Sir Hew Strachan (History), Dr Joshua Hordern (Theology) and Dr Tom Simpson (Philosophy and Public Policy). A light lunch will be provided.

In "In Defence of War" Nigel Biggar provides a succinct account of the logic, strengths, and weaknesses of religious and non-religious pacifism. The book reasserts the complex moral reasoning of the early Christian just war tradition from Augustine to Grotius against the exclusive rights-talk of liberal just war thinking and explains how to order the use of the various criteria of just war, so as to produce a coherent final judgement. It also includes a painstaking analysis of the 2003 Iraq invasion, as well as a moral analysis of Britain's involvement in the First World War.
