Chipping Norton Theatre: Female Composers and Sound Artists Sought From Oxford University For Suffrage Project

The Road Behind, The Road Ahead – a project inspired by The Suffragette movement.

The Theatre Chipping Norton, in association with Arts at the Old Fire Station, Bodleian Libraries and TORCH.

The Theatre Chipping Norton is seeking one or more female sound artists and/or composers to work on original pieces of music/sound-art inspired by experiences of female equality. As part of a wider project marking the centenary of the first votes for women, involving photography and theatre productions, they are interviewing around 50 women of diverse ages and backgrounds from across the county. The interviews will cover their experience of being a woman, their experience of female companionship, and their experiences of female equality.

The Theatre Chipping Norton would like to find one or more composers/sound artists from the student body at Oxford University to work with them on creating and recording pieces of music or sound-art drawn from and using the recordings of these interviews. This might take the form of underscore, of sampling, or perhaps re-recording as song. The final pieces will be exhibited, alongside pictures of the interviewees, at the Old Fire Station Gallery, The Theatre Chipping Norton gallery and the Weston Gallery at the Bodleian in the autumn of 2018. They are working alongside feminist theatre company Scary Little Girls and fine-art portrait photographer Christine Bradshaw.

The Theatre Chipping Norton are looking to appoint in May 2018, with the composition and creation work being done from early June to late August. They will cover all travel expenses, and can provide some equipment and a small budget for musicians if required. The composers/sound-artists would be expected to provide high quality recordings of the final work.

If you would be interested in discussing the project further, please send a short statement of interest alongside a CV or summary of previous relevant work in the field to Will Treasure on Closing date for expressions of interest – May 8th 2018.

The Theatre Chipping Norton look forward to hearing from you!
