Medical ethics is un-controversially a core element of contemporary medical practice. It is a component of all medical school curriculae. Ethics is also present, albeit in a ‘patchy’ manner in postgraduate medical education. Here it appears as a part of training newly qualified doctors, for doctors in specialist training and for continuing professional development. It appears as a refresher of principles underlying acceptable and praiseworthy practice, for purposes linked to professional roles such as leadership, education, and research, and as a survival skill for doctors who have to deal with every day issues.
Postgraduate medical ethics education comes in myriad forms ranging from a seminar at a hospital grand round, to an array of postgraduate diplomas and higher degrees.
Dr Steven Bolsin, our international guest keynote speaker, will address the connections between medical ethics and patient-safety.
Organised by the Institute of Medical Ethics, this event will offer an opportunity for academics, educators and clinicians to better understand the purposes, nature and problems of ethics-education for and of qualified doctors.

**As part of this event delegates are invited to send abstracts for posters relevant to the topic of postgraduate medical ethics education. Those whose abstracts are accepted will be asked to submit a "virtual" portrait orientation A0 poster as a MS power-point slide. These will be printed alongside the abstracts and included in a handbook for delegates. These may form the basis for discussion during the parallel sessions. Abstracts must be no more than 500 words in a MS word document or the body of an email and must be received by May 8th. Posters must be received by May 15th in order to be included in the handbook.
