Language training in MT20: enrolment now open

Posted on behalf of the Oxford University Language Centre.

In Michaelmas term, the Oxford University Language Centre will be continuing to offer its full portfolio of courses in 11 modern languages, fully online. We are using a hybrid flexible model, combining learning pathways, which our learners work through at their own pace and in their own time, with small group live conversation classes held via MS Teams. Enrolment for these courses has now opened online at https://www.lang.ox.ac.uk/language-courses. In particular, we highlight the following:

  1. New - Advanced Autumn Intensive Online Courses: following our successful new online intensive courses in 2019-20, we will be running three-week intensive online courses for advanced learners (B1+ to C1) in French, German, Italian and Spanish before the start of term (starting the week of Monday 14 September).  These courses are designed using a flexible learner centred approach and may be a useful support for anyone whose language learning or practice opportunities have been affected by Covid-19.
  2. At a time when language practice may be reduced through the lack of travel opportunities - the Language Centre offers a wide range of languages including Japanese and Mandarin Chinese at high levels.  These courses may support students with some much-needed practice for their studies or in having further opportunities to be engaged socially and culturally around language learning.  Our experience of small group online live teaching during Covid is that it enables learners to connect with a small but diverse community of practice which they strongly value.
  3. Through the Virtual Language Centre, which is a Canvas ‘container’ with open access for anyone with an SSO, we also facilitate exchanges for language learning, support various student-led initiatives such as the Swahili Learning Community Forum in partnership with the University’s Africa Society and the Language Immersion nights and the Online Language Learning Exchange.
