Professor Sally Shuttleworth featured in Financial Times

Technology and the Diseases of Modern Life Workshops (Projection)

Professor Sally Shuttleworth (English) of the 'Diseases of Modern Life' research project has provided expert comment in a recent Financial Times article, 'A brief history of executive burnout'.

In the article, Professor Shuttleworth notes that the concept of executive overwork is prevalent not only in the modern day, but also among the Victorians. In the late nineteenth century, business leaders were given to taking periods of time away from their workplace as a result of burnout, giving them a legitimate reason to recuperate in various holiday destinations.

This concept is explored in detail in 'The Victorian Cult of Health-Seeking', a talk given by Professor Shuttleworth as part of the Victorian Light Night in November 2018, a large-scale public engagement with research event which drew crowds of over 2,500. TORCH and researchers from the ERC-funded ‘Diseases of Modern Life' project teamed up with the award-winning Projection Studio for a spectacular building projection and sound show onto Oxford's original Radcliffe Infirmary. This event was part of the national Being Human Festival and Oxford’s Christmas Light Festival.
