‘Using Historical Evidence of Birth to Enhance Our Cultural Sensitivities’: Seminar Report

On Friday 6th November, Valerie was invited to lead a seminar for a group of 20 final-year midwifery students at Brookes. The theme was ‘Using historical evidence of childbirth to enhance our cultural sensitivities’. One activity involved groups examining some of the posters from the RCOG exhibition to identify historical evidence of cultural sensitivities, from religious and astrological beliefs to evidence of respect for the personal dignity of women. The student midwives and their tutors (Ethel Burns and Louise Hunter) also provided Valerie with information on current practice and debates on positions for labour and birth.
