Doctoral Network on 20th Century European History

This network of doctoral students working on twentieth-century European history was created by a group of like-minded European historians some ten years ago, as a means of enabling doctoral students in a number of European universities to meet, present papers, and to learn from the mutual exchange of ideas. The project of working on twentieth-century European history is a subject, (and one which continues to expand in many new directions; but it is also a methodology, and an ambition. The idea of developing ways of writing about European history which would escape from national paradigms, and draw on a rich range of different methodologies, remains as relevant now as when the network was created. Indeed, one might well say that in an era of Brexit, and of the resurgence of more insular national academic cultures, it has become all the more so.

The network has never benefited from any external funding, and we were delighted that the TORCH International Partnership Scheme was able to part-fund our 2019 meeting in Oxford. The event was attended by more than twenty doctoral students, and five faculty members from Padua University, the Ecole Normale Supérieure Paris-Saclay, Geneva University, the Humboldt University in Berlin, the Free University in Brussels (ULB), and Oxford.
