The Queen’s College is Oxford’s most complete neo-classical College. In around 1708, the College commissioned the architect Nicholas Hawksmoor, then working with Wren and Vanbrugh, to produce a grand design to completely replace the medieval buildings. What was eventually executed was described as “one of the most Majestick Pieces of Architecture in the whole Kingdom” and featured an ambitious modern Chapel unique in Oxford.

To coincide with the three hundredth anniversary of the Chapel’s consecration in November 1719, the College is putting on a programme of events, including a half-day seminar “The New Chapel at Queen’s, 1719”: a study day celebrating three hundred years of the Chapel at The Queen’s College, Oxford on the afternoon of Saturday 9 November.

A range of expert guest speakers will explore the architecture of the Chapel and its historical, musical and religious context. Please see the attached flyer for more details. The day is free of charge, but please register online (essential if you would like to join a tour of the College). The day will be followed by a concert of music from c.1719, for which tickets will be available separately.
