This study day is an interdisciplinary event, open to all.
The event will include 4 papers by academics, librarians, musicians, and museum professionals, on the subject of collecting in the eighteenth century: who collected and what motivated them, what did they collect, and how did they go about it? The topics discussed will range from country house libraries to individuals' keepsakes; from books and music to technical drawings and natural specimens.
Confirmed speakers include Dr Tim Eggington (Queens’ College Library, Cambridge), Dr Karen McAulay (Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Glasgow), and Dr Arthur MacGregor (formerly of the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford).
The day will include plenty of time for discussion, bringing together the group's thoughts on individual collectors' personal motivations and methods, social networks that shared in these activities, and the wider cultural contexts that led to collecting, categorisation, display, and publication in this period.
The event is free to attend.
