Reading Group: Spouting Clubs and Other Forms of Historical Re-Enactment
Monday, February 18, 2019 - 5:15pm to 6:45pm
Rainolds Room, Corpus Christi College
Ellen B. Brewster (DPhil in English, Exeter College Oxford), will lead a discussion of the potential value of historical re-enactment for researchers across the humanities. Ellen will be drawing on her own experience of facilitating workshops where members of the public re-enact the experience of going to an eighteenth-century 'spouting club'. These were reading clubs, usually meeting in a pub, where participants read out extracts from their favourite plays and poems. Our discussion will consider the uses (and mis-uses) of this kind of re-enactment by researchers.
The Theatre & Performance reading group meets fortnightly on Monday evenings in term, for informal discussion of critical work in theatre & performance studies. Each session is led by a postgraduate student or early career researcher on a topic connected with their research, with a short reading circulated in advance.
