Passing Judgement: Distinctions, Separations, and Contradictions

The Oxford University Byzantine Society was very grateful to receive the support of Oxford Medieval Studies, sponsored by The Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities (TORCH) for its 25th Annual International Graduate Conference on the 24th-25th February 2023. Entitled ‘Passing Judgement: Distinctions, Separations, and Contradictions’ the conference explored the altering views and identifications of people, places, and concepts in Late Antiquity and Byzantium and the recognition of a changing world. The 25th anniversary allowed the OUBS to recognise its past and exhibit materials from previous conferences and events while building our cross-institutional networks to ensure our future. The conference attracted an excellent turn-out over its two days, the highest for several years, while the 32 papers from 12 countries constituted representation from every centre of Byzantine Studies within the United Kingdom. A volume of selected papers will now be selected and expanded for publication in the future.
