Emily Knight and Rhea Sookdeosingh (TORCH Graduate Project Coordinators)
This week we opened applications to the 2016 AHRC-TORCH Public Engagement Summer School, which will run from 18 to 22 July. Building on the success of last year’s summer school, we have created a programme that will provide participants with the skills and resources to integrate public engagement into their research and to encourage discussion about its value and role in society. We have already begun this conversation on our blog and have heard from several graduate students about their experience of public engagement.
Over the course of the summer school, we will hear from numerous academics within Oxford including Knowledge Exchange Fellows, Cultural Exchange Fellows, Access and Outreach Officers and DPhil students, who will discuss their experiences of working with non-academic institutions and community groups in a wide variety of forms. From National Trust partnerships, topalaeography workshops, podcasts series, and outreach projects, the summer school will draw upon the rich and varied experiences of our academic community. We have also invited numerous speakers from outside the university who will discuss pitching for TV and radio, popular journalism, digital projects with museums and libraries, and turning academic research into documentary film. Skills suitably honed, participants will have the opportunity to pitch for seed funding for public engagement projects, putting into practice what they have learnt during the Summer School.
Furnished with the skills developed over the course of the week and with a sense of the personal and wider benefits of public engagement, we hope that this year’s cohort will feel inspired to think about new and innovative ways of sharing their research.
To apply for this year’s AHRC-TORCH Public Engagement Summer School download this form and send it to gradprojects@humanities.ox.ac.uk by 1 June 2016.
