Book at Lunchtime 2024

Book at Lunchtime has been welcoming wonderful authors to TORCH since 2013. In 2024 we are privileged to be hosting book discussions across fascinating subject areas and across many different faculties. It is an intimate opportunity to listen, learn and discuss the books - directly with the author and with an expert panel.

The first book of 2024 is Domicide: Architecture, War and the Destruction of Home in Syria by Dr Ammar Azzouz. on Wednesday 17 January at 12.30pm.

"A deeply moving and clear eyed account of the Syrian conflict from a scholar who has lived its harsh realities on the ground and in exile. Domicide dispels the fiction of a post-conflict Syria, reminding us that the violence continues unabated, just in different configurations, in the wake of war. Azzouz poignantly describes how predatory states weaponize urban reconstruction, enacting new waves of violence in an effort to re-write history and erase communities. Moving us away from the endless mourning of monumental destruction, Domicide tells the bigger story of loss, the deliberate destruction of home."

Book at Lunchtime welcomes people from within Oxford University and beyond. We are delighted to host people from all walks of life and from different parts of Oxfordshire. Our discussions take place in the historic Radcliffe Infirmary Building, now Radcliffe Humanities. You can find out more about the history of the building and site by watching the astonishing Light Night experience "Temenos"
