Expanding Shared Heritage and Knowledge Resources: The United Kingdom, Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean

Historian and heritage expert Dr. Tara Inniss from The University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus has been awarded a CaribOx Travel Grant to visit the University of Oxford next year. This will enable her to access records, photographs, and diaries held in the Bodleian Archives and Manuscripts Collection, particularly those relating to Caribbean history with reference to the Codrington Papers.

While in Oxford, she intends to visit nearby historic properties such as Ashdown House, built by Royalist William Craven, 1st Earl of Craven (1609–1689), and Greys Court, which has long-standing intergenerational connections to the slave trade and slavery in the Caribbean. Additionally, she plans to consult county archives in Oxfordshire and other nearby counties, especially in the West of England.

Dr. Inniss’ study will help identify records that are important for documentation and digitisation, with the joint aims of preservation and improving access to historical resources for researchers in the Caribbean.
