Decoloniality and its effects

About

paint colours swirling in water

What is Decoloniality? Is decolonisation equal to decoloniality? How can we detangle ourselves from presumptive structures of knowledge to decolonise our research methods and writing practices in humanities and social sciences?

We are a group of DPhil students who are thinking through the epistemologies and ontologies of decoloniality and decolonisation as practices and analytical categories in our different fields (Anthropology, History/oriental studies, and Middle East Studies). We invite other graduate students to join our reading group gatherings.  All fields of studies are welcomed. We believe in the importance of stirring up interdisciplinary discussions to learn together and rethink the practices in the aftermath of the colonial heritage, and its influence on the colonized lands, societies, and psyches. We hold the conviction that the intellectual exchange between scholars in humanities and social sciences have manifested the critical sense of the decolonial turn, and enriched the understanding of the evolving nature of theorizing the colonial and the post-colonial

We invite you to attend our public events in which we will conduct discussions animated by selections of readings, screen movies, and literature related to decoloniality and its effects.

The organizers of the group are:

Wesam Hassan, Dphil Candidate, Anthropology

Aftab Malick , Dphil Candidate, Oriental Studies

Yasemine Zarhlouli , DPhil Candiate, Oriental Studies
