Aphra Behn, The Emperor of the Moon

emperorreading

Dr. Baliardo has lost the plot. Obsessed with crackpot theories and more interested in his huge telescope than his family, an intervention is needed – and that’s exactly what his daughter, niece, and their lovers intend. When Baliardo is contacted by none other than the “Emperor of the Moon”, so begins an elaborate ruse that will bring both the triumph of love and the return of reason.

Aphra Behn’s spectacular farce – packed with slapstick humour and special effects – delighted audiences when it premiered in 1687.  This rehearsed reading is a counterpart to the online show, adapted and directed by Gari Jones, that ran from 22-28 April. It is presented in collaboration with the R/18 Collective and TORCH.
