Christian Political Theology in the House of Islam: Loyalty, Legitimacy, and Law (622–1453)
A series of hybrid research seminars to be held in autumn 2025
The TORCH Network for The Impact of Islam on Christian Political Theology and the Centre for Muslim-Christian Studies Oxford together invite proposals for research papers exploring pre-modern political-theological discourses of Christian communities under Islamic rule, as well as receptions and perceptions of these discourses in Islamic literature.
Proposals might address issues such as:
• Theological conceptions of legitimate political authority or just rule among Christian communities under Muslim rule
• Intersections of Christian canon law and Islamic law, and their implications for Christian political identity
• Christian views on loyalty, resistance, or collaboration vis-à-vis Islamic rulers
• Comparative Christian perspectives on the use of force across diIerent confessions, political regimes, or literary genres
• The significance of martyrdom narratives for Christian political theologies
• How political theologies are expressed in Christian apologetic or polemical material regarding Islam
• The reception or perception of Christian political theology in various types of Islamic literature
Proposals welcome from established scholars as well as postgraduate students.
Accepted papers will be presented in a hybrid (in-person and online) research seminar series running from October – December 2025 in Oxford.
