Policy and Communications Micro-Internship with the Heritage Alliance

Applications are now open for Oxford University students to undertake a remote micro-internship with the Heritage Alliance in June 2021.

Do you want to work at the heart of heritage policy? Are you passionate about the heritage sector?

The Heritage Alliance unites over 150 independent heritage organisations in England as a powerful, effective and independent advocate for heritage. We bring together independent heritage organisations from the National Trust, English Heritage, Canal & River Trust and Historic Houses, to more specialist bodies representing visitors, owners, volunteers, professional practitioners, funders and educationalists.

What you will do:

Through this micro-internship, you will see an exciting and varied workload. It could see you help prepare a response to a Government consultation, attend meetings with Historic England or other key partners, update our website or write for our fortnightly newsletter. You will also experience the administrative tasks that keep our organisation going such as researching the heritage related interests of MPs, organising and minuting meetings and communicating with our member organisations.

Your tasks may cover:

  • Supporting the Advocacy and Communications Officer and Projects Officer to progress our current Diversity and Inclusion project;
  • Researching a wide range of policy briefs affecting the Alliance’s members when possible;
  • Writing for the Alliance’s fortnightly e-newsletter Heritage Update;
  • Writing and uploading content onto our website;
  • Managing our social media accounts; and
  • Digitally attending key stakeholder meetings and taking minutes.

You will be supervised by our Advocacy and Communications Officer and together you will identify objectives for your week-long placement. You will also have the chance to work alongside our Policy and Communications team and attend staff meetings.

Please note, you will need to provide your own laptop.

This micro-internship will give you the opportunity to gain demonstrable experience in policy, communication and research, whilst also gaining insight into the breadth of the heritage sector.

What you will gain:

  • By the end of the internship you will have gained experience of synthesizing a wide range of archival and online information, along with an understanding of how to present this in a concise and engaging manner to inform strategic decisions regarding the management of historic houses and other heritage assets.
  • You will have the opportunity to present your findings at the end of the week to representatives from Chatsworth and Wentworth Woodhouse.

You will need to demonstrate:
