Editing your own Academic Writing

Are you close to a full draft of your article, book, or thesis? Does it resemble a baggy monster that needs taming? If so, this course is for you. 

Through activities and group work, you’ll learn techniques for getting your writing into shape. You’ll emerge from this workshop with strategies and resources for editing your writing. 

Learning Outcomes: 

Following this workshop participants will  

  • Improve your knowledge of different approaches to editing 

  • Understand how to improve the structure of your writing 

  • Understand the use of signposting in your writing 

  • Learn how to maintain consistency and clarity in your writing 

  • Develop your proofreading technique 

Please bring to the workshop

  • a single document with all of your thesis headings and subheadings. You will be asked to open this document on your computer and share it with others during the session. 
  • a piece of written work with you (preferably short).  You can either print this out beforehand or in the workshop you can open a copy on your computer.  

About the trainer: 

This session will be delivered by Dr Jo Collins. Jo is a coach, trainer, researcher and consultant specialising in supporting researchers and academics in the Higher Education sector. Over the years, in her roles as teacher and coach Jo has supported academics and researchers develop productive reading and working strategies. Jo has been working in Higher Education for the last twenty years, and is also Senior Lecturer in Counselling, Coaching and Mentoring at Canterbury Christ Church University.
