Image and Identity exhibition
October - December 2022
Museum of Oxford
An exhibition of colonial period photography and Oxfordshire photography, serving as a springboard for contemporary discussions and explorations.
Photographs from collections in Sri Lanka; the Pitt Rivers Museum (Oxford); and the Underhill Collection (Museum of Oxford); as well as community archives will showcase and juxtapose themes of image, impression, and time, specifically referring to colonial photography and consideration of its placement today. Taking photographs of Ceylon (present day Sri Lanka) and Oxfordshire as our departure point, we ask if echoes of those links are still present today, and how the visual messages constructed then impact on our understanding of people and places now.
