Week 4 Meeting| Language, Colonialism, and Nationalism

Friday 19 May 2023, 5.30 - 7pm

Colin Matthew Room, Radcliffe Humanities Building

All welcome.

Join us for the Language and Education Reading Group Meeting in Week 4! The theme for this week is 'Language, Colonialism and Nationalism'. The meeting is on Friday, 19 May, 5.30-7pm in the Colin Matthew Room, Radcliffe Humanities Building, Woodstock Road.

This session will focus on the complex relationships between language, education, imperialism and nationalism, and how this continues to impact language practices, policies and politics across much of the Global South. The readings for this week provide a brief overview of the historical processes that have shaped the relationship between language and education, including their constitution as categories in nineteenth and early twentieth century imperial discourses, and how newly independent nations have communicated nationalist narratives through educational institutions. The extended reading list looks at contemporary issues in language learning, curricula and politics from different parts of the world to help students appreciate the complexity of the postcolonial context and understand the deeply entrenched legacy of empire in education and language studies.
