Elizabeth Montagu Correspondence Online is pleased to announce the launch of its new website www.emco.swan.ac.uk containing the first sections of its digital edition of the complete correspondence of Elizabeth Montagu, the celebrated eighteenth-century salonnière, business woman, philanthropist and woman of letters.

The objective of EMCO is to publish a digital edition of all known letters written by Elizabeth Montagu, together with detailed scholarly notes and other valuable ancillary information, in a free access website. For the first time, letters held in a variety of repositories in different countries are brought together in a form that will enable them to be read and searched by any person in the world who has access to a computer.

There are [4,000] known letters in Montagu’s hand, and the task of transcribing and providing detailed notes to each letter is expected to take several years. However, we have taken advantage of the flexibility provided by the digital format to publish the full inventory and first sections of edited letters. New batches of letters will be added on a regular basis.

This launch event will introduce the website to all the features, explain the work plan, introduce the editorial team and section editors, and raise a (virtual) glass to Elizabeth Montagu.

This event will be held online as a Zoom webinar. The event is free but registration is required.
