Mapping Your Research Landscape

Please note this workshop is only open to Humanities researchers at the University of Oxford

This workshop is for researchers at any career stage who are interested in understanding how their research fits within the broader research environment.

In order to build a long-term sustainable research career it is important to have a clear understanding of your research field and how you and your research fit within it. It is also essential to have a good awareness of interconnecting research areas/sectors to stay ahead of the curve with new innovations and developments that will have an impact on your own research area.

With a well-developed strategic awareness of how your research fits within the ‘research landscape’ you will be in the best position to make decisions about how to build your profile within a dynamic research environment.

In this interactive workshop we will explore tools and approaches to assist in strategic awareness and planning for your research. You will have an opportunity to take an objective view of your broader research field and start to build a plan that enables you to be proactive in pursuing your research goals and responding to the big questions in your field.

Following this workshop you will:

• Understand the drivers for building strategic awareness of the broader research environment.
• Have strategically mapped your research field(s) and have an awareness of how your research fits within the broader ‘research landscape’.
• Have considered key stakeholders within research environments and how best to engage with them.
• Have considered the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats for your research field and career over the longer term
• Have practical knowledge of a range of tools to assist in regularly maintaining a strategic oversight of your research field(s)

Natalie James is the Founder and Director of Research Coach, an organisation that provides one-to-one coaching and a variety of professional development workshops and events for academics, researchers and higher education professionals. Prior to launching Research Coach, Natalie spent four years managing research staff development activity at the University of Sussex, before which she spent five years as a senior manager at the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. She graduated with a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Bristol in 2009.
