Octavius Morgan Travel Journals | Society of Antiquaries of London

Applications are now open for a paid summer internship of four weeks with the Society of Antiquaries of London. This internship was set up and funded by the Heritage Partnerships Team through the Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF) in close collaboration with the Oxford University Careers Service.

The Society of Antiquaries of London is an educational charity that promotes understanding of the human past and recognises distinction in this field through election to its Fellowship.

The Society was founded in 1707 and today our 3,000 Fellows include many distinguished archaeologists and art and architectural historians holding positions of responsibility across the cultural heritage. The Fellowship is international in its reach and its interests are inclusive of all aspects of the material past.

The Society’s principal objectives are to foster public understanding of that heritage, to support research and communicate the results and to engage in the formulation of public policy on the care of our historic environment and cultural property.

The Society of Antiquaries holds the papers of Charles Octavius Morgan (1803-1888), MP and antiquary, including four of his travel journals from the 1820s and 1830s, detailing his trips in both Britain and Continental Europe. This internship project will make them more accessible by digitising and transcribing the journals, and using social media and mapping to provide an insight in Morgan's travels.

Applicant Profile

  • We are looking for someone with a strong interest in history and working with archives.
  • As a key part of the project is publicising the journals via social media, good communication and writing skills are essential. Creativity is encouraged!
  • While training will be provided, experience in reading 19th-century handwriting and/or digitising archival material is welcome.

Students who are selected for this internship will be awarded a £1,519.04 Arts and Heritage Internship Award. Please note this may not be enough to cover the full cost of this internship.
