Teaching to Transgress

For twenty years, the M.St Women’s Studies programme at Oxford has challenged the Academy, its research, its praxis, and its ethics. Women’s Studies addresses intersections of women’s identities, including gender, race, sexuality and class: it is a uniquely-placed discipline that focuses on women’s lived experiences whilst encouraging and valuing their academic participation.

Our conference is a commemoration of the past twenty years of Women’s Studies at Oxford. As current students, we want to present the rich, interdisciplinary research that the programme produces whilst addressing the on-going debates surrounding Women’s Studies as a field and method of research.

We have invited prominent academics in the field to present keynotes, including Prof Ros Ballaster (University of Oxford), Dr Lucy Bolton (Queen Mary, University of London), Prof Laura Doan (University of Manchester), Prof Jack Halberstam (University of Southern California) and Prof Patricia Hill Collins (University of Maryland). Current students will also present their work, ranging from '“Sisters comin’ together”: female rappers and collaboration' to 'The Medicalization of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder'. The day will end with a panel on 'The Future of Women's Studies' with participants including Dr Dana Mills (University of Oxford, Political Theory), Dr Maria Jaschok (University of Oxford, Chinese Anthropology, History and Gender), Lilth Dornhuber de Bellesiles (Rhetoric and Composition, MSt Women's Studies Aluma) and Rhiana E. Gunn-Wright (African American studies, women's gender and sexuality studies).

Covering a range of topics, including queer theory, phenomenology and black feminism, this conference will showcase the diversity of Women's Studies and address questions of its future.
