In 2009, numerous manuscripts by Florence Price (1887-1953) were discovered in the composer’s former summer home in Illinois. Works that were thought to be lost were found and reunited with the rest of the Price materials at the University of Arkansas. As the missing pieces of the puzzle came together, an even more detailed portrait of this pioneering African American composer began to emerge. The late Price scholar Rae Linda Brown remarked, 'the end of this story is now really the beginning. It is, however, for the next generation of music scholars to delve through the music, to study it, to perform, to record it, and to tell the rest of the story'.
In this talk marking Black History Month 2021, Dr Samantha Ege (Music) explores Brown's words in relation to her own research and the possibilities for new and exciting directions in Price scholarship. The talk will take place from 5.30pm - 6.30pm, followed by a reception until 7pm.
