TORCH International Research Grant

International Engagement at TORCH

International Engagement at TORCH facilitates and supports connections and collaborations between University of Oxford researchers and those at non-UK institutions. We encourage interdisciplinary and creative approaches to research across the Humanities.

What is the International Research Grant and who can apply?

This scheme supports researchers in the Humanities who require visits to international institutions (e.g., libraries, archives, research centres) to further current and/or new research projects. Applicants must show evidence that they will work with a specific institution and collaborator(s) in a non-UK setting.

Researchers can apply for up to £2,000 for travel, accommodation, and related costs (more below). All funds must be spent, and activities carried out, by 1 July, 2023.

Post-doctoral academics at Oxford are eligible for this scheme. We especially encourage early-career researchers to apply.

The submission deadline is:

Michaelmas Term | Week 2 | Friday, 21 October 2022 |12:00 noon (BST)

What costs will be covered?

Please review the University of Oxford Expenses Policy for detailed information about what can be claimed as an expense. The International Officer can offer advice about creating budgets as part of this application process.

How are applications reviewed?

The applications are reviewed by a panel comprised of TORCH academic leads and members of the TORCH Management Committee, against the key areas given below:

  • Context and rationale for the proposed visit. Applicants should clearly explain the relevance to their research, and how the proposed collaboration will contribute to the current research environment at TORCH and/or Oxford Humanities.
  • Proposed events and activities. Provide a clear timeline for travel and planned activities.
  • Lasting legacy. Applicants should indicate what future opportunities the proposed project may lead to, particularly future strategic research collaborations, but also if there are publication plans. Applicant may wish to comment what new connections will be established, and what the fit is with any existing TORCH projects, networks, or programmes.
  • Deliverability and budgeting. Applications should include realistic timelines and be appropriately costed in detail. Costs can include relevant and appropriate travel, accommodation and subsistence costs (that meet the University guidelines). Please refer to the University Expenses Policy

How are applications submitted?

Oxford applicants must submit the application via IRAMS. The application includes a ‘Case for Support' form.

Candidates are strongly encouraged to consult the Notes for Guidance in advance of application.
