Vacancy: Junior Research Fellowship in African and Comparative Literature

St annes college new library

St Anne's College, Oxford

£31,608 per annum

The Governing Body of St Anne’s College invites applications for a Junior Research Fellowship in African and Comparative Literature, starting on 27 September 2021 (or as soon as possible thereafter), for three years. The post is attached to the Oxford Comparative Criticism and Translation Research Centre (OCCT), which is based jointly in St Anne’s College and TORCH (The Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities).

The JRF is open to those at an early stage of their academic career. Applicants are expected to have submitted their PhD thesis by 31 July 2021, or to be post-doctoral researchers who on 1 October 2021 are within five years of the award of their PhDs or equivalent professional training.  Career breaks do not count towards this limit.   Applications are particularly welcome from women and black and minority ethnic candidates, who are under-represented in academic posts in St Anne’s College and in the University of Oxford.

Applications are encouraged from scholars who work beyond the boundaries of languages with literary dominance as a result of colonial histories. This may, for example, mean working on literature in non-European languages; in creoles; or in contexts where the relationships between what can be defined as ‘languages’ or ‘dialects’ are complex. ‘Literature’ here is conceived broadly as including orature, a range of print cultures, and related modes of cultural production; and ‘Comparative’ may point to any kind of engagement with linguistic and cultural plurality, including translation.

Applications will be judged on the basis of the candidate’s potential to undertake a significant and exciting programme of research in an area of African and Comparative Literature, as evidenced by their research proposal, publication record and academic references.

Duties: The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • engage in high quality research;
  • publicise the outcomes of that research through presentation of papers and publications;
  • work with colleagues in OCCT, notably its Chair, Prof Matthew Reynolds, and its Co-ordinator and Postdoctoral fellow, Dr Eleni Philippou, to expand the profile of research in African and Comparative Literature at Oxford by holding seminars and a conference, by establishing links with other institutions, and by developing grant applications;
  • engage in the life and activities of the College.
