What if we taught Classical languages in place of modern languages in primary schools?

Presentation at the Languages Future Conference

On Wednesday 21st April (in 2021), Rome’s birthday no less, Dr Holmes-Henderson gave a paper at the Languages Future conference hosted by the Language Acts and Worldmaking project at King’s College London.

This paper drew on Dr Holmes-Henderson’s research evidence from the Classics in Communities project. It also exposed failures in way modern languages are currently taught in primary schools, as identified by the British Council and the Research in Primary Languages network. While valuing the learning and teaching of all languages, this presentation made key arguments for the prioritisation of Classical languages at Key Stage 2. You can read more about Dr Holmes-Henderson’s work in her article for the Oxford Humanities blog: https://www.humanities.ox.ac.uk/article/ancient-and-modern-languages-in-primary-schools#/
