The Heritage Partnerships Teams is pleased to circulate this call for papers for the second round of World in a (Historic) House, a partnership hosted by the Institute of Historical Research


New in 2021, World in a (Historic) House is a Partnership Seminar Series hosted by the UK’s Institute of Historical Research (IHR). Held online, it is convened by organisations on both sides of the Atlantic, and brings together practitioners and academics working at the intersection of colonialism and the built environment.

After a successful inaugural term we are now welcoming proposals to present at our seminar in the 2021/22 academic year (October 2021 - July 2022).

If you work in this space, we want to hear from you.

We are seeking proposals for a range of topics, including:

  • Slavery and the built environment
  • Landscape and violence
  • Descendant engagement programmes and perspectives of historically marginalised groups
  • History and memory
  • The climate emergency and environmental issues
  • Archaeology
  • Reparations
  • Connections between domestic and industrial space
  • Contested heritage, monuments,and memorialisation
  • Architecture
  • Conservation challenges
  • Global domesticities
  • Migration and diasporas
  • International collaboration

We want to hear from a variety of participants, including graduate students, academics, heritage professionals and practitioners in this field.

World in a (Historic) House is a global seminar. We are particularly keen to highlight work and perspectives from Africa, East and Southeast Asia, Australasia, North and South America as well as the Caribbean, Europe and the UK.

Our sessions are 90 minutes long, and we welcome proposals for various formats. These might include (but are not limited to) single papers, roundtables (5 x 10-minute presentations/papers) and panels (3 x 20-minute presentations/papers).
