Stephen Bailey, part of the 2024-25 cohort of the Royal Shakespeare Company's Interdisciplinary Fellows programme was a visiting fellow with TORCH for a year. During that time Stephen worked with researchers across the English and Medieval & Modern Languages Faculties on his project: translating the play La vida es sueño (Life is a dream) by Pedro Calderón de la Barca, in light of Disability Theory and Translation Studies.
"Translated drama has long shaped British theatre, yet certain traditions — notably Spain’s Golden Age — remain marginal despite their historical and artistic significance. My research examined how prevailing industry approaches to translation, particularly the pursuit of ‘accuracy’, may limit how classical texts are understood, valued, and staged today."
