Call for Papers: Unsettling Familiarity in Community Health

Deadline: Tuesday 30 June 2026

The TORCH Medical Humanities Research Hub at the University of Oxford invites contributions that engage creatively and critically with the concept of familiarity at the frontline of community health. Submissions may explore moments that seek a sense of familiarity, for instance in circumstances of illness, pregnancy, and grief. They may also reflect on the ethics, practices, and technologies that create or constrain familiarity in community-based health services and wellbeing activities. We especially welcome discussions that deepen understanding of the self, trust, community, efficacy, and other key themes in medical humanities.

We encourage interdisciplinary collaborations and welcome submissions in diverse scholarly forms, including but not limited to research papers, photo essays, and ethnographic fieldnotes. Selected contributions will form part of a hybrid research workshop on 8-9 October 2026.

Please submit an abstract of up to 250 words by 30 June 2026 to communityhealth.oxmedhum@gmail.com

We aim to review all submissions and confirm decisions within one month of the deadline.
