Queer Studies Across Cultures: A Roundtable on Cross-Linguistic Research

Wednesday 20 May 2026, 5pm-6.30pm

Thatched Barn Research Centre, Christ Church College

All Welcome, no registration required

The word "queer" is famously difficult to translate outside of the Anglosphere, often ending up transliterated as is and recognisably foreign, making LGBTQ+ identities and experiences appear non-native to other language communities. What kind of challenges does this create for research into LGBTQ+ topics in those language communities? How can we navigate the difficulties of talking about queerness in languages and cultures that don't have a word for it? And what can we learn from doing so?

Join us on Wednesday of 4th Week for a panel discussion featuring Professor Charlotte Ross (Professor of Italian and Gender Studies), Talia Kollek (DPhil Student in Area Studies (Russia and East Europe) ), and Elliot Koubis (DPhil Student in Modern Greek and French), to discuss the challenges of working in queer studies across different languages and cultures – as well as the unique benefits of doing so.

Wine, non-alcoholic drinks, and snacks to follow!
