Mohamed Reda Boudchar is a researcher and professor of History at the Abdelmalek Essaâdi University (ENS) in Tetouan, Morocco. He holds doctorate degrees in History (2022) and in History of Religion (2007). His research interests and publications (in Arabic, Spanish, and French) span the medieval to early modern periods, addressing: the social and cultural history of Morocco and al-Andalus, moriscos (Spanish converts from Islam and their descendants), Sufism and hagiography, travel accounts, Spanish-Moroccan/Christian-Muslim contact. Recently, he co-edited the volume, Al-Magreb y al-Andalus en la Edad Media e inicios de la Edad Moderna (2022). In 2024, he won the Ibn Battuta Prize for Travel Literature for his book, The Late Andalusis in Travel Accounts to Spain 1494-1862 (الأندلسيون الأواخر في الرحلات الأوربية إلى إسبانيا 1494-1862).
He also serves as a pedagogical advisor at Dar al-Arabiyya (Dar Loughat) and has experience as an Arabic-language instructor.
He especially looks forward to sharing his knowledge of early modern Moroccan ambassadors to Spain and their role in brokering interaction between Spain and the Maghrib with “Arabic in Spanish."
Mohamed is a researcher with “Arabic in Spanish: Speaking, Knowing, and Belonging at the Edges of Europe” a new project for research and public engagement, supported by The Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities’ PCER fund.
