Indian cinema has always embraced a creative, playful and experimental approach to language, particularly through Hindi film song lyrics. This project, which begins with an attempt to ‘historicise’ Hinglish in the context of Indian cinema, uses the medium of digital collage to explore what English words and expressions used in song lyrics reveal about changing trends and lifestyles in India and its diasporas, the influence of mass and new medias on language, as well as how the mixing of languages in song lyrics can be seen to reflect the hopes, aspirations and desires of a changing film viewing audience.
