The Bard Music Festival returns for its 32nd season this August, with an intensive two-week exploration of “Rachmaninoff and His World.”

Join us for the highly anticipated 32nd season of the Bard Music Festival, taking place this August. Over the course of two weeks featuring the world of Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873–1943), join us for one of the standout programs - Program Four, "Rachmaninoff and the Female Muse." In this enlightening concert with commentary, Bard's Scholar-in-Residence, Philip Bullock, Professor of Russian Literature and Music at the University of Oxford, explores the influence of women in Rachmaninoff's music. Many of the composer’s songs were inspired by women who held significant places in his life. From his teenage sweetheart Vera Skalon to his wife Natalya Satina, and the great soprano Antonina Nezhdanova, Rachmaninoff's compositions were deeply intertwined with the female presence. Furthermore, he set texts by prominent Russian female poets, including Marietta Shaginyan, who also served as inspiration for Rachmaninoff's close friend Nikolai Medtner.
