The Rent Cultures Network warmly invites you to our next film screening: Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, followed by an informal conversation with Julien Migozzi (Department of Politics and International Studies, University of Cambridge) and Charlotte Wilson (Faculty of English, University of Oxford).
Set in and around an Airbnb, the film follows Marcel, a tiny shell living with his grandmother Connie. Gentle, funny, and unexpectedly moving, it offers a rich way into questions of care, domestic space, precarity, and the fragile arrangements through which life is sustained.
After the screening, Julien Migozzi and Charlotte Wilson will join us for an informal conversation about some of the questions the film raises. Julien is Assistant Professor of Development Studies in the Department of Politics and International Studies at the University of Cambridge, and works on housing platforms and contemporary capitalism, with a particular focus on South Africa. Charlotte has recently completed her doctorate at Oxford in nineteenth‑century literature and care, and will bring a literary and historical perspective to the discussion.
