Following on from the Introduction to Hurrian series of Trinity Term 2023, over the summer vacation we will have a weekly Hurrian Reading Group that works through texts in the Hurrian language, in order to develop our understanding of this understudied Ancient Near Eastern language. We will begin by reading parts of the Mitanni Letter (EA 24), and then moving on to epic/mythological texts, such as the Song of Release. This will allow us to see, in situ, the complexities of this language, to experience the different varieties of the Hurrian language throughout its surviving written history, to engage with Hurrian religion and mythology, and, for several bilingual texts, to see how the Hurrian and Hittite versions of a text compare.
