RADICAL ART IN ANTI-COLONIAL LONDON - ONYEKA 16WE

The influence of anti-colonial politics from the 1930s to 1950s will be explored through the making of A Radical Duet, an artist moving image project by Ruskin Senior Tutor, Onyeka Igwe.

Biography: 

Onyeka Igwe is an artist and researcher working between cinema and installation.In her non-fiction video work Onyeka uses dance, voice, archives, sound design and text to create structural ‘figure-of-eights’, a format that exposes a multiplicity of narratives. The work comprises untieable strands and threads, anchored by a rhythmic editing style, as well as close attention to the dissonance, reflection and amplification that occurs between image and sound.

She has recently completed a practice based PhD researching colonial moving images; their reproduction and enduring impact on the present.

She has been published in MIRAJ, Alphaville: Journal of Film and Screen Media and The Feminist Review. Her video works have shown at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London, Dhaka Art Summit Berlin Biennale, and the London, Rotterdam International and Smithsonian African American film festivals. She has exhibited at Articule, Montreal, Trinity Square Video, Toronto, Jerwood Space, London and The Showroom, London. 

Onyeka was awarded the 2018 British Assoc. of Film & TV Studies Best Practice Research Portfolio: Experimental, and the 2020 Arts Foundation Fellowship Award for Experimental Film.
