Monday 18 May 2026, 12.30pm - 2pm

Learning Centre, Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities

All welcome

Following our keynote lecture from Professor Gilroy-Ware in Week 2, we’ll be reading and discussing sections from her book ‘The Classical Body in Romantic Britain’, which ‘radically challenges enduring assumptions about the art produced from the late 18th century to the early Victorian period, casting new light on appropriations of the classical body by British artists’ by foregrounding 'the intersections of gender, race, and class'. You do not need to have attended the lecture to come to the reading group and vice versa.

Reading: Introduction & Chp. 3 [Scans to be circulated via mailing list or available from the Bodleian]
