Is the Black church Dead Part II: Prosperity Gospel and the decline of Black religious political clout in the United States

 

 

The proliferation of large Black Megachurches in the United States has helped to erode the political power and witness of Black Churches in the US context. The tension between conservatism, race, and eroding civic engagement have taken a toll. Professor Butler’s talk will investigate some of the reasons this has happened, with prospects for realizing religious activism for African Americans. 

 

Biography: Professor Butler is a Senior Koch Fellow at Wadham College, and is the Geraldine R. Segal Professor of American Social Thought at the University of Pennsylvania.
